Large amounts of cardboard are used to ship Mio devices to their customers and these boxes inevitably have a huge impact on the environment. In order to reduce this impact, Mio has been reducing the size of its packing.

Since 2007, the size of Mio’s packaging has been reduced by 41%. By decreasing the amount of packaging material by hundreds of tons a year, Mio saves approximately 6 one way flights a year on shipments to Europe.

Mio has been using environmentally ink with a low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) carrier for some time, but from 2010 the ink used to print the packages will be replaced with soybean oil as a carrier. Soybean oil makes a more environmentally friendly carrier than traditional petroleum based carriers for several reasons: when growing, soybeans absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and during recycling they cause less air pollution and are easier to deink. The ability to deink is important since it not only increases the amount of paper/cardboard that can be recycled; it also produces better quality recycled paper because the fibers suffer less damage.
