A

  • Acquisition Time

    The time it takes for a GPS receiver to establish a connection with enough satellites to give an accurate position. Acquisition Time is greatly reduced with the new SiRFstarIII technology. (See SiRFstarIII)

B

  • Bicycle Mount

    A secure clamp that allows a Mio DigiWalker device to be mounted onto bicycle handlebars. Gives easy access to all the device functions while riding.

  • Bluetooth®

    Wireless technology that allows a Mio DigiWalker device to communicate with a mobile phone (properly equipped) to function as a speakerphone for hands-free calling in the car. Can also synchronize contacts and map files between a computer, phone and a Mio

C

  • Car Mount

    A mount for a Mio DigiWalker device so it can be used in the car. The device can speak the directions out loud so the driver doesn't need to use hands. Gives easy access to all the device functions in the car.

  • Channel

    The number of signals that a GPS receiver can receive at one time. The more the better when trying to get a speedy and accurate position.

  • Cold Acquisition

    The amount of time it takes to get a location fix when first turning on a Mio DigiWalker device. SiRFstarIII greatly reduces this wait.

E

  • Echo Cancellation

    Technology that digitally removes the echo effect of a microphone picking up sounds coming from a nearby speaker. Helps to clearly hear a caller's voice when using the Bluetooth® hands-free speakerphone option.

  • GPS

    Global Positioning System. A grid of satellites in orbit around the earth that transmit signals to help determine location.

  • GPS Accuracy

    How exact a position GPS is able to calculate. Depends on location and weather conditions. GPS Accuracy is improving with every generation of GPS products, and embedded with SiRFstarIII, Mio DigiWalker devices are among the most accurate on the market.

  • GUI

    Graphical User Interface. Visual elements such as buttons or Windows® that the user interacts with to control the device.

  • Handheld

    A portable device that fits comfortably into one hand and can be operated with the other hand. Many Mio DigiWalker devices are handhelds.

I

  • Internal Antenna

    Some GPS devices have antennas that extend beyond the shape of the device or need to be plugged in. Mio DigiWalker strives to design easy-to-use products, and as such, antennas are incorporated inside the device.

  • Landscape View

    A horizontal view, where the length of the screen is greater than the height.

  • Line of Sight

    The lowest level data required for he mapping software to work with a GPS signal. The better the Map Data the better and more accurate the directions and positioning.

M

  • Map Data

    The lowest level data required for the mapping software to work with a GPS signal. The better the Map Data the better and more accurate the directions and positioning.

  • Mio Club

    An exclusive club for owners of Mio DigiWalker products.

  • MioMap

    Software that helps calculate directions on a Mio DigiWalker device.

  • M-Life

    'Mobile Life'. The kind of lifestyle that Mio DigiWalker products are designed for..

  • Mobility

    Ability and ease of movement. Mio DigiWalker devices increase mobility and enable the user to carry all their information with them.

  • MRE

    Major Roads of Europe. Mio DigiWalker devices equipped with MRE are able to guide across Europe with included maps. MRE allows greater freedom by providing major roadways throughout Europe.

P

  • PDA

    Personal Digital Assistant. A device that holds many types of information about life that can be accessed anywhere. Many Mio DigiWalker devices include PDA functionality.

  • PMP

    Portable Media Player. Allows viewing of videos and listening to music on the go.

  • POIs (Points of Interest)

    Points of Interest. Places a user might want to go or might be looking for. Examples include gas stations, hospitals, restaurants, airports and tourist destinations.

  • Portable

    Something that can be carried with or on a person, typically smaller than usual. The perfect word to describe Mio DigiWalker products.

  • Portrait View

    A vertical view where the height of the screen is greater than the width. The most convenient screen organization layout for handheld use.

  • Region

    A geographic area. Maps for GPS devices are typically available by region.

  • Rotatable Views

    A device that can display the interface in either vertical or horizontal orientation depending on how it is used. Some Mio DigiWalker devices offer this feature.

S

  • Satellite

    An object in orbit around the earth. In the case of GPS it is a device that broadcasts time-coded signals to help determine position.

  • SiRFstarIII

    An accurate and fast improvement over classic GPS technology. Mio DigiWalker devices with SiRFstarIII are able to receive strong signals more quickly in difficult areas.

  • Smartphone

    A mobile phone that also includes PDA functionality. A "really smart" phone should also have GPS functionality built-in.

  • Synchronize

    In the case of PDAs, the act of duplicating information on a primary computer into a PDA. This information can be used to provide caller identification.

T

  • TeleAtlas

    One of the world's leading providers of digital map data.

  • TMC

    Traffic Messaging Control. A radio-based technology available in some areas that can provide up-to-date traffic and other information for the best and most efficient routing with a Mio DigiWalker GPS device.

  • Touchscreen Interface

    A very convenient and clear way to control a Mio DigiWalker device.

U

  • USB

    Universal Serial Bus. A speedy way to exchange data between a Mio DigiWalker device and a computer. Can also provide power to recharge the battery.

W

  • Waypoint

    Location that can be stored in memory and used for navigation purposes. Waypoints can be used to create a route that goes by interesting locations before arriving at the destination.
